More about Carmel Mountain, California Carmel Mountain is located in the northern part of San Diego City, just south of Rancho Bernardo and north of Poway. The area has easy access to I-15, SR-56 and the I-15 "fast lane" making it an easy commute to downtown metropolitan offices and other employment centers. Carmel Mountain Ranch is commonly known as CMR. The community features a large shopping center, Carmel Mountain Plaza. There are approximately 12,000 residents who make Carmel Mountain home, enjoying its proximity to recreation, shopping and its convenient location mid-county. Another attraction, the schools are run by the Poway Unified School District, the highest scoring district in the county.
